Laponia Weekend

Culture and history along the Lule river

Laponia weekend is a hike that walks you through historical moments and the living culture in the valley. People have travelled this way for different reasons for thousands of years. The Sami have been herding their reindeers, Norwegians have escaped the Germans and strong men and woman have challenge the arctic climate to build a dam 110 km from the closest road. During three days we follow well-used trails and stay in hostels, 100-years old buildings and a traditional Sami tents.

Stora Sjöfallet (Great Lake fall) is a national park that was declared to protect what once was the biggest waterfall in Europe. Not even ten years later it was decided to build a dam to control the water that supplies Sweden with essential electricity. This dam have played a big role for the region but also affected the people living in the area.

This hike is for you who…
…are looking for an active vacation exploring the history and culture of Laponia. You should be able to hike between 5-10 kilometer per day with a backpack of 8 kg and moderate differences in altitude.

The food
Fjällaktiv Lappland values nutritious food made from real ingredients and put a lot of effort into preparing menus for the tours and expeditions. A typical day starts with a Swedish breakfast and in the evening we cook dinner together. Our dinners are inspired by local food from the Sami culture as well as more general Swedish food. As long as weather permits we will have a longer break during the day eat a lighter lunch and re-energize.
In Pietsaure sami settlement we will eat local fish and sami bread and in Saltoluokta we’ll enjoy a three-course dinner in the restaurant.
Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions or allergies and we will do our best to support your needs.

The accommodations
The first and the last day of the tour we will stay in hostels where you will share room with other participants of the group. You will of course have access to both water-toilets and showers. On the second night we will stay in an over 100-years old cabin and the third night we sleep on reindeer fur in traditional sami tents.
Even if the cabins are simple they provide the most essentials as heat, beds, blankets and everything we need for cooking and eating. This cabin has  served as a shelter for numerous of hikers and even refugees during the last 100 years. The outhouse has seen its best days but is still functional and situated within within 100 meters from the hut. In Pietsaure they lend you a sleeping bag for you to stay warm all night and outhouses are not far away. There is no electricity or running water in the huts or in Pietsaure and we all help with the daily duties. One day you might be the water carrier or responsible for chopping vegetable for dinner.
Please let us know if you want to upgrade your stay to a cabin in Pietsaure or a double or single room at the hostel.
